A Certificate of Authenticity
-
Council Member Martinez hands some of us the award. Somebody had to represent us but picture yourself in here instead"
Congratulations to Laundry Love Santa Ana for earning an official Certificate of Recognition from the City of Santa Ana! A special thanks as well goes to Council Woman Martinez for noticing us and thinking enough of us to hand us this award. As it turns out our Laundromat is in her ward and she said that occasionally she has driven by there on a Thursday night and seen a large crowd out front with music cranking. Yep, that would be us all right, we like to party.
Of course the most special of thanks goes out to all our volunteers and supporters who have continued to devote time, quarters and detergent to the cause month in and month out. I can’t believe we have already been doing this for seven months nor can I believe the impact such a simple thing seems to be making. Not only do you devote the tangible goods, but the intangibles as well. Things like your love, friendship, kindness and support for those in desperate need of it, and that is what stands out the most.
I never got a lot of commendations or awards growing up. I never had perfect attendance and I made the A and B honor roll maybe twice. I also got the obligatory little league baseball trophy even though my team came in last place and I once won a speech contest. That’s more or less it, and so to me this little honor is kind of cool. Not because of the actual certificate itself, or not even because of who gave it to us, but more so because of what it represents: love in action.
Love in action attracts attention and love in action will not go unnoticed. I like to call this award our Certificate of Authenticity because in todays down trodden and weary world people long to see something different, something genuine and real, and when they do, they flock to it. To paraphrase John Wesley, “catch yourself on fire with enthusiasm and people will come from miles around to watch you burn.” I love this quote because it means that anyone, anywhere can make a difference.
And that is the other lesson I take away from this. Anyone can make a difference if they are willing to do so, and it doesn’t take much, even something as simple as clean laundry. Our volunteers and supporters know this, they experience and see it every month. So from the bottom of our hearts we thank every one of you who made this possible and we look forward to seeing the continued difference you guys will make!
Sincerely,
Laundry Love Santa Ana Team
